BankTalentHQ’s coach, Donna Flynn, answers an Ask the Coach question – how can you explain being fired when you are in a job interview?
Explaining being fired is not always comfortable, but is manageable. Without knowing the specifics of your situation, here are some guidelines I suggest:
1. Be honest. Explain the facts non-defensively of the situation. Stick to the facts, rather than making excuses, rationalizing, etc. so you can quickly move on to the next interview question.
2. Be accountable. Own your role in the situation. Don’t blame others. If the job wasn’t a good fit-just say so.
3. Share what you learned from the experience. Lessons learned and professional growth show that you are resilient and can move forward in a positive way.
4. Share what you will do differently in the future, if applicable.
